Description:
The following topics are covered:
Energetics - 1st law, heat, work, internal energy, enthalpy, heat capacity.
Entropy and Free Energy - Carnot cycle, 2nd law, entropy, free energy and work functions, 3rd law, equations of state.
Changes of State - phases, components, degrees of freedom, phase rule, simple phase diagrams; Solutions - integral and partial molar quantities, active co-efficient, ideal and non-ideal solutions Gibbs-Duhem equation.
Chemical Affinity - equilibrium, equilibrium constant, activities and standard states, equilibria of various types of systems.
Electrochemistry - free energy, entropy and enthalpy of reversible cells, ionic activities and activity of co-efficients, Nernst equation.

Assessment is by assignments, final examination and laboratory work.
Prerequisites: M161 Calculus and Matrix Algebra (previously entitled Principles of Mathematics) or M182 Applied Mathematics. A knowledge of chemistry equivalent to that in M140 Introduction to Chemistry is assumed, and students must pass M141 Principles of Chemistry or M142 Chemistry to Life Sciences or M150 Physics for Science and Engineering before undertaking this course.

Administrative information:
This is a 1 semester course (15 weeks). Between 10-14 hours of study per week is required. It is a 3 point course.
